The panchayath town Ullal, located around 10kms south of the city is a
major tourist destination of Mangalore. It was considered as the capital
of Tulu Kingdom in the middle of 15th century during the reign of Rani
Abbakka Devi, who was known as the first promoter of Women’s liberation.
Fishing and Beedi rolling are main occupations of the residents of this
town.
Ullal has many historic places to visit such as Someshwara temple, summer
sands beach resort, queen Abbakka's fort at Ranipura, and Seyyad madani
dargah. The Ullal Juma Masjid, built in memory of the Muslim saint Seyyid
Mohammed Shareeful Madani, is a famous pilgrim centre located here. From
the premise of Someshwara temple one could see the ruins of Rani Abbakka’s
fort.
