Located in Boloor, 4 km from city, Sultan Battery is a major tourist attraction
in Mangalore. This watchtower, built in black stones gives the impression
of a miniature fortress with its arrangements for mounting cannons all-round.
It was constructed in 1784 during the reign of Tippu Sultan in order to
watch the warship entry into the Gurpur River. The tower with no maintenance,
is in ruins as it could not endure the extreme weather conditions. The
existing portion of the Sultan Battery is the Tippu's well. It is maintained
and preserved by the Archaeological Survey of India, so that the tourists
can get a glimpse of this historic monument.
It is said that near this location there are undiscovered caves that
is believed to be the entrance to a tunnel, which leads to Tippu’s
fort in Sri Rangapatanam.
