Venur

Venur or Venoor, an important pilgrim center of Jains, is a beautiful town located on the banks of river Gurupur at a distance of 50 km North East of Mangalore. The place is famous for the 35 feet height colossus of Gommateshwara (Lord Bahubali) built by Thimmanna Ajila in 1604 AD. It is among the four giant monoliths of the same God found in Karnataka (the others being at Shravanabelagola, Karkala and Dharmasthala). The statue standing on a raised platform with out any support is worth watching.

Apart from this spectacular monolith of Bahubali, Venur have seven beautiful ancient temples namely Akkangala Basadi, Binnani Basadi, Shri Shantinath Temple, Kullu Temple, 24 Teerthankar Temple, temple of Bhagwan Adinath and a 5 feet high temple built on a black rock.
