Chandramouleshwara temple, located at Unkal, 5km from Hubli town on Hubli-Dharwad
road is dedicated to Lord Shiva (Chandramouleshvara). Built by Chalukyans,
this 900 year old beautiful temple is one of the best example of the Chalukya
style of architecture. The walls of the temple are adorned with sculptures
and the pillars are carved out of black granite stones. Besides the two
big Shivalingas, the temple houses images of dancing Lord Ganesha and
Jaalandhra which are worth visiting.
Due to its national importance, the Chandramouleshwara temple is declared
as a protected monument by the Archeological Survey of India under the
Ancient Monuments and Archeological Sites Act 1958. The picturesque Nrupatunga
hill is situated opposite to the temple. The other nearby attractions
are the Unakal circle and Unakal Lake.
