The Assam State Museum, situated in the city center at the southern end
of Dighalipukhuri tank, has an envious collection of antiques dating back
to the prehistoric times. These includes a large collection of archaeological
and historical objects, sculptures, paintings, metal, ivory and woodwork,
costumes and ethnology etc. This large multipurpose museum of the north
east region was established in 1940 as a non-government body and was taken
over by the state government in 1953. There are exhibits of reconstructed
huts of Assamese tribes and one can walk right through these village huts.
There are also displays of weaving and musical instruments. The museum
is open from 10am to 5pm during summer and 10m to 4.30pm during winter.
It is closed on Mondays and second and fourth Saturdays. Photography inside
the museum is allowed only with the permission of authorities.
