If you really want to pursue a career in Astronomy or Cosmology, first, should have a natural inclination to learn physics and mathematics. There are two aspects you may consider, which depends on your own interests, the theoretical (science stream) or instrumentation (engineering stream).

For a career in Theoretical Astronomy, with PCM in 12th, you can pursue B.Sc. in Physics/Mathematics/Astronomy. At an advanced level, you can pursue M.Sc. in Physics/Astronomy. These courses are offered by various Institutes and Universities. Basic sciences over specialized subjects will always lend you diverse opportunities later in your career. Selection of Integrated M.Sc.-PhD/ M.Tech-Ph.D. programmes are also offered by Indian Institute of Astrophysics for which you should appear for the JEST examination (https://www.jest.org.in). Applicants who are expected to complete their final examinations by August of each year are also eligible to appear for the JEST exam of that year. Applicants must pay an application fee and register to appear for the exam. In order to pursue a career in Instrumentation or Experimental Astronomy, one can do Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) in Electrical, Electronics, and Electrical Communications.

Once you selected your choice, during your graduation studies, you can apply for summer projects at Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bengaluru and summer and winter programmes at The Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics, Pune. These efforts will help to collaborate with the peers in the discipline. In the meanwhile, procure a small telescope, a basic textbook on sky watching. Start gazing at the numerous stars and other astronomical objects, and adapt yourself with the subject right from the earliest possible moment. You can check http://www.tejraj.com/products.html for affordable range of telescopes. In addition, there are excellent open source software, viz. SkyChart / Cartes du Ciel (http://www.ap-i.net/skychart/en/download) to help you to understand the sky. Good programming skills will help to achieve invaluable insights into your career.

Once you made up your choice and if you would like to know more about the institutions, please let us know and we can direct you to the right places.
