COGS is a Society of all the Gynecologists in Ernakulam Dt. It was founded in 2000 by Dr. Gracy Thomas with just 15 members. She was the also the Founder President. Now the membership has gone up to 250 .
Motto: The motto of the Society is “to uplift the family through better health of women “
FOGSI: COGS is a branch of Federation of Obstetrics & Gynaecolgy of India. (FOGSI ), Mumbai, which contains 200 Societies of Gynaecologists all over India.
AIM : COGS was started initially just to create a platform for all the Gynaecologists practicing in & around Ernakulam to get to know each other and to share their various problems. Later accademic meeting was organized to conduct Continuing Medical Education (CME) programmes , inviting speakers to give talks on different topics. Every year Annual CME is conducted , which is a one day programme. In 2006 , All India Congress of Obstetrics & Gynaecology (AICOG) for 8000 National & international members was organized. In 2008, All Kerala Congress of Obstetrics & Gynaecology (AKCOG) was conducted by COGS.
Social Activities :
COGS is involved in lots of social activities to fulfill the motto & also to improve the health of women. Health awareness programmes are organized in urban & rural areas . Public talks, medical check ups, anaemia eradicatiom programmes etc are organized in Women’s organizations, Anganvadies, Ladies Clubs, Resident’ Associations etc. regularly.
To reduce maternal mortality by preparing the teenagers & youth for better motherhood and responsible parenthood, Adolescent Health Education (AHE) is given in all the schools & colleges. The girls & boys are educated separately . AHE includes hygiene, food habits, teen age problems, life skills, anatomy & physiology of human body, menstruation , pregnancy, moral values , family life etc.
Premarital Education is another field of activity of COGS. The members help the Catholic Church who conducts the Premarital Education in Ernakulam, by educating the would- be couples about family life & responsible parenthood.
In 2010, COGS has started a new venture which is a health club called ‘Feminine Forever’ , to look after the physical ,mental ,emotional & psychological health of women above 35. The admission is free . A monthly meeting with health talks and other activities to bring out their hidden talents are organized for them. It is found to be a great relaxation time for them especially for widows and for others whose children are far away .
Awards.
FOGSI & IMA have recogonised the social activities of COGS and declared it as the Best Gynaecological Society in India in 2009. COGS also received awards for the best youth activities in 2008 & 2009 consecutively from FOGSI.
