| | The Regional Transport Office is responsible for most
changes with regard to vehicles on the streets. Whenever a vehicle is purchased,
it has to be registered through the RTO, whether handled by the car dealership
or the owner directly. They are also responsible for maintaining law and order
on the roads by implementing traffic rules and making sure existing rules are
followed. Among their vast jurisdiction, they also handle providing drivers
licences and the changes being made to them.
One of the most common issues faced by people is changes or errors on their
proof of identification. If you change your name or there was an error with the
way your name was spelt on your driver's licence, getting it rectified can be a
little tricky. There are couples of formalities to be handled when making
changes to Government documentation and identification proof.

With the new system, you can head to the RTO website and download the right
forms to get this done. It is however recommended that you travel to the office
directly since they are not very prompt with online facilities. After getting
and filling out the right forms, mention your reasons for changing your name and
provide supporting documents to get it done.

Here is the list of documents needed when applying to change your name on your
driver's licence.

 Form L.L.D
Form 1 – Which specifies details and mandatory information.
Marriage Certificate – In case you are changing your name because of your
married. This is especially true for women.
ID Proof – Identification proof like PAN card, Voter ID or Passport (which has
your permanent address on it)
Address proof – Voter ID or Passport (a second document to verify the first
proof of address)
Original Driving License (with the name that needs to be changed)
Copy of the existing Driving license. (since they would need the same in
duplicate)
Processing fee, which is usually less than a few thousand, but the amounts are
constantly varying.

After submitting all of these documents, paying the fees and handing over the
receipts, you have to wait for the documents to be approved by the RTO. The next
step would be providing your biometrics and other basic information. You would
then receive a receipt which you have to produce when you are collecting the
corrected driver’s licence about a week later.

The entire process of getting your name changed on your driver’s licence can
also be handled online. However, there are a few issues with getting this done
remotely. The main issue is that the online forms are not stamped which means
you print forms that have to be stamped before submitting them to the office.
Secondly, the response time to website queries takes forever and rarely is
beneficial so you end up in the office anyway to get the information required.
