Welcome to the World of Defence Services,

Note from the author : Lt.Col. CS Jayavel (Retd)

Dear parent congratulations for taking the first step to steer your child’s career into the path of highly motivating, dignified and a very satisfying profession in the world

“Ask not what the country can do for you; ask what you can do for the country”
                                                                                                                 … John F Kennedy

Well, since you have decided to get your son educated at one of the most prestigious schools in the country, let me take the pleasure of taking you step by step to prepare your child for a stress free entrance into the Sainik/Military/ RIMC/ AFMC/ NDA/ CDSE/ SSB Interviews

First of all let us look at the main difference between all the three institutions:

1) Sainik schools 2) Military schools 3) RIMC(Rashtriya Indian Military College)

Why Sainik School ?

The aim of the school is to prepare the boys academically, physically and psychologically for entry into the National Defense Academy or other walks of life. Character, team spirit, dedication to purpose, a patriotic outlook and a desire to serve the country with zeal and efficiency are the qualities sought to be promoted by the training at the school.

Sainik Schools are fully residential schools run on public school lines. All the schools are members of All India Public Schools Conference. They offer a common curriculum and are affiliated to the CBSE, New Delhi. While developing a wholesome personality of the boys so that they are fit for the NDA, the schools also prepare boys for class-X and XII examination of the CBSE as well as UPSC exam for the NDA. The medium of instruction is English even though English is not a pre-requisite for admission. Since these schools prepare boys for NDA in the +2 stage only the Science stream is offered. Besides academic excellence the students are encouraged to develop creative faculties through co-curricular activities and socially useful work. They are systematically introduced to all major games and given compulsory NCC training up to class-XI. Adventure activities form an integral part of training. Each school has extensive infrastructure and land to cater to needs of comprehensive training so that boys are brought up in conducive environment.

Sainik / Military Schools are following a similar pattern except the former is under the control of the Sainik school society and the latter is with the ministry of Defence. The Sainik Schools offer 65 % to civilians while the military school offers 65% to serving/ retired defence services personnel’s children. The Sainik Schools are almost 1 per State and Military schools are 5 in number in the entire country. They give admission in class VI and IX once a year. The fee structure in Sainik Schools are much higher as compared to a Rashtriya Military schools.

Rashtriya Indian Military College, a feeder institution of National Defence Academy, is a public school for boys situated in Doon Valley, Dehradun under the Ministry of Defence. The school offers admission to civilians bi-annually i.e., in January and July each year to class VIII only. Candidates (boys only) should not be less than 11 1/2 years of age but must not have attained the age of 13 years on 01 January and 01 July of the term they join.

How your son’s life style is different if he is in Sainik School ?

Sainik School vs Normal School

  1. Trains students for NDA, 10 +2 tech Entry after schooling / No Such options

  2. Compulsory N.C.C Training / Optional

  3. Fully Residential with high quality lifestyle / May or may not

  4. Stress on Physical fitness / Optional

  5. CBSE syllabus / May or May not be

  6. Strict Military Discipline enforced / No Such Enforcement

  7. Over all personality Development envisaged / More stress on Academics

  8. A cadet gets adjusted to a life of armed personnel / A normal life

  9. Training given under guidance of serving military officers / Trained by civilians

  10. Aided by central and state government / May or may not be

  11. Early exposure to defence life / Not at all

  12. Adventurous life style ( Swimming, Horse riding, etc) 24 hours vigilance / A Normal one,9 to 5 routine

Note: Rastriya Indian Military College is situated in Dehradun ( Uttarakhand) that gives admission twice a year for aspirants in Class VIII only.( In Jan and July every year.) It is fully funded by Central Government and the parents have to pay about 1/5th of the total amount of cost of training. The vacancies are very limited.

Life style offered in Sainik/Military and RIMC

A student in Sainik school is been trained in many aspects to build their over all personality to become a well deserved person to serve our nation as an officer/ and in any other walks of his life. A life that make a cadet a perfect gentleman ready to face the future in a competitive world with confidence and ability to take the situation head on.

Appreciate your efforts and interest shown here and I am very happy today and proud that my Son Sidharth will be joining Sainik school Trivandrum. It was my dream to be in force but I was not succeeded, I was certainly sure, that if I have a son I will put him in force..At the age of 4 I started tuning him to that objective..he was joine Karate session in Abu Dhabi at the age of 4, and I bought him play station where he can enjoy flight stimulation and air warfare games...I could see his interest growing and finaly this year it happend! He is accademicaly and sportic wise good and stood as school leader / sports captain /and good dancer in his school in his age group..I sent him foot ball coaching / ICC cricket accademy in Dubai / today I am a proud father of my son...He cleare both entrance and intervie for AISSE-2012..he is leaving his International School life in Dubai and will join in May ..Sainik School Kazhakoottam..I will miss my son very much...but I wanted him to be a tough / disciplined /leader to face the challenges ahead...I wish he should get into NDA and as he always say..'Dad I wanted to be Ace fighter" and to be in AIR FORCE...Your few lines make me convinced that I took a right decision....I wish my son sidharth all the best in his future life in sainik school....and wish to see him in uniform and wanted to salute him before I die....Jai Hind.

It is nice to see many parents are interested to educate their children in Sainik/RMS/RIMC schools.

A few guide lines for the aspirant's parents and well-wishers

a) Start early - take him to the institute you want him to join. Let the child see the life style offered in the institute.

b) This will motivate the child and bring about an interest in the child to join the school.

c) The age of the child should be about 8 Say Class IV . This is the right age for the child to understand why you want to put him the school.

d) Start coaching him in Maths, English and Reasoning (intelligence tests as well as General Knowledge.)

e) Improving the speed, understanding the Concept in maths and knowing about the events will create his interest.

f) Take the child for various competitions. This will help him to understand where he is and help him to build up his confidence and preparation to succeed .

In case you required study kit please see
