Traditional dishes that you can prepare to celebrate Gurpurab

Guru Nanak Jayanti, also known as Gurupurab, Guru Nanak Dev Prakash Purab or Guru Nanak Aagman Divas is finally here. As it is Gurpurab, the dishes have to be special just like the occasion itself. The aroma of freshly prepared desi ghee kadha prashad and the sound of pressure cooker whistle can be heard from every Gurdwara to prepare the community lunch (langar).

Kadha Prashad


One of the most important traditional sweet and without it occasions like Gurpurab feels incomplete. This is prepared with wheat flour, desi ghee and sugar. Kadha Prashad is a smooth, velvety texture halwa that is made by roasting wheat flour, very slowly in a substantial quantity of ghee in an enormous kadai. The kadha prashad is served hot with hands to sangat.

Meethe Chawal


This is one of the most popular rice dishes cooked for Gurpurab. Meethe Chawal is made with aromatic basmati rice, ghee, sugar, and an array of dry fruits. Saffron is sometimes added to this rice dish.

Chana Dal Khichdi


Next on the list is Chana Dal Khichdi. To make this dish, soak chana dal with rice for 4-5 hours before cooking it with spices in ghee. Vegetables like peas and carrots can be added to enhance the flavour. Source: Pexel

Makke Ki Roti, Sarson Ka Saag

Makki ki roti, also known as Makki di roti, is a flat cornmeal chapatti. It is cooked on a griddle or tandoor. It is served with sarson ka saag with a dollop of butter. To add more traditional Punjabi touch people enjoy it with Lassi (Chaachh).
