Inspiring films based on Mahatma Gandhi, Father of the Nation

As the calendar turns to October 2, people across the world celebrate the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, fondly known as ‘Bapu’. His ideologies and unwavering belief in 'Swaraj' (self-governance) and 'Ahimsa' (non-violence) not only won him accolades worldwide but the Father of the Nation taught us valuable life lessons through it. To mark this occasion, let’s look at the most inspiring and memorable movies based on his values and life.

‘Gandhi’


This is a biographical film directed by Sir Richard Attenborough and featuring Ben Kingsley as Mahatma Gandhi. The ‘Gandhi’ (1982) depicts the fight to achieve independence from British tyranny through his ideology of nonviolence and civil disobedience. The film won several awards.

‘Gandhi my father’


The film highlighted Mahatma Gandhi's life as a father, a part of the Father of the Nation's life that is generally overlooked.

The film is based on the biography 'Harilal Gandhi: A Life' by Chandulal Bhagubhai Dalal about Gandhiji's son Harilal Gandhi. Akshaye Khanna took the starring role. Feroz Abbas Khan directed the picture, which Anil Kapoor produced.

‘Hey Ram'


This semi-fictional film is about India's partition and Nathuram Godse's assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. In the film, renowned actor Naseeruddin Shah plays Gandhi, and Kamal Hasan plays Saketh Ram, a Hindu fanatic.

Kamal Haasan wrote, directed, and produced the historical drama film ‘Hey Ram’. Shah Rukh Khan and Rani Mukerji also appear in the film.

‘Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara’


The plot centres around a retired Hindi professor, Uttam Chaudhary, played by Anupam Kher, who suffers from dementia and believes he is accused of murdering Gandhi. Uttam believes that he killed Gandhi by accidentally shooting Gandhi with a toy gun that had real bullets. Urmila Matondkar portrayed his daughter Trisha. Jahnu Barua directed the film, which Anupam Kher produced.

‘Lage Raho Munna Bhai’


When talking about Gandhi movies and ideologies, how can we forget about Sanjay Dutt starrer ‘Lage Raho Munna Bhai’?

Rajkumar Hirani's directorial 'Lage Raho Munna Bhai' tried to show Gandhi's teachings of kindness, love, and nonviolence, which played a crucial part in protests against the British Raj, as still applicable to achieving love and peace in modern personal and social difficulties.

'Partition 1947'


'Partition 1947' addresses the suffering of people during partition as well as the split in Hindu-Muslim love and brotherhood.

Hugh Bonneville, Gillian Anderson, Manish Dayal, Huma Qureshi, and Om Puri feature in the film. Neeraj Kabi took on the role of Mahatma Gandhi. Gurinder Chadha directed the movie.

‘Gandhi Godse Ek Yudh’


The film set in the backdrop of post-independence India of 1947-48, highlights the conflict of ideologies between Nathuram Godse and Mahatma Gandhi. Helmed by Rajkumar Santoshi, the film also stars Deepak Antani as Mahatma Gandhi and actor Chinmay Mandlekar as Nathuram Godse in the lead roles.
