Before enrolling for PhD, she must get informed by the supervisor that on which specific subject she will be conducting her study. Some institutes admit students without giving a specific problem beforehand and student get stuck/ confused with subjects of a little or no importance. For selecting a specific problem for PhD, it solely depend on the supervisor and funding agency, or in some rare case on the student herself. However, she must know the future aspects of the subject under study.
After her PhD, she can follow a few years of post doc career. During that period she may start to apply for projects by herself or as a consortium.
This is the time for establishing herself and establishing her own laboratories . This lead her to undertake other PhD students to work for her.
