Located 5kms east of Jodhpur railway station and 6kms from Jodhpur city on the top of Chittar hills is the Umaid Bhawan Palace, built during the period of 1929-43 by Maharaja Umaid Singh. Umaid Bhawan Palace is also called as Chittar palace as it was build by a special type of stone called Chittar. The palace is a fine example of Indo-colonial art-deco style of thirties which was designed by famous Edwardian architect Henry Vaughan Lanchester. More than 3000 people worked for 14 years for constructing this palace. The architecture of Umaid Bhawan Palace makes it unique in the state. Instead of using mortar or cement, the palace was constructed with interlocking blocks of sandstone. 

Spreads over an area of 26 acres of land, Umaid Bhawan Palac is separated into three distinctive parts - museum, deluxe hotel and a royal residence. The museum in Umaid Bhawan Palace exhibits items belonging to Jodhpur's royal like heritage weapons, antique-clocks, crockery, hunting trophies etc. It also has a collection of miniature paintings, stuffed leopards, crafts and royal finery.

Umaid Bhawan Palace is one of the most modern palaces in Jodhpur and the largest private residence in the world. It consists of around 350 rooms, throne room (houses Ramayana paintings), billiards room, library, squash court, tennis court and swimming pool. The main attraction of the palace is its majestic 105 - foot high cupola of Renaissance architecture. The exterior of the building is adorned with spacious lawns and landscaped gardens. The palace also has some vintage cars.

Museum opens from 10am to 5pm (except on Sundays) and the entry fee is Rs. 50/-
