Wayanad, the hill station located in the northeast tilt of Kerala at a distance of 76kms from Kozhikode, is a favourite tourist spot of both locals and tourists. Carved out of Kozhikode and Kannur, Wayanad was formed as an independent district on November 1st, 1980. The name Wayanad has been derived from the word ‘Vayal Nadu’ which means the village of paddy fields. The place is known for its spices, especially pepper. Almost all crops like coffee, ginger, cocoa, areca nut, tea, rubber, vanilla etc grows here. Notable tourist spots in Wayanad include Kalpetta, Sultan Bathery, Vythiri, Mananthavady, Ambalavayal, Wayanad Wildlife sanctuary, Muthanga, Lakkidi, Kuruva Island etc. Waterfalls namely Meenmutty, Suchipara and Kanthampara falls, and the famous Thirunelli Vishnu Temple are located here. Edakkal caves and Pookodu Lake are the other attractive tourist spots in Wayanad. Kalpetta, one of the major Jain centers in Kerala, is the district headquarters.

Public buses as well as private buses help one to reach Wayanad.
