Gothuruth Boat Race

Gothuruth, a small hamlet located about 31kms north of Ernakulam in Paravur taluk is a part of the renowned ancient port town Muziris. Since 1938, Gothuruth hosts a spectacular boat race named Gothuruth Boat Race (GBR) every year on third Sunday in the month of September. It is one the most important race held in close proximity to the city of Kochi. The event takes place in one of the tributaries of river periyar. The Moothakunnam Sree Narayanamangalam Temple and Kadalvathurthu Holy Cross Church is located on either side of this tributary. The boat race is organised by Gothuruth Sports and Arts Club (SAC) and the winners are awarded trophies. 

'Chavittu Nadakam', the colourful traditional art form of Christians has had its first steps in Gothuruth. This island can be accessed from Ernakulam through new Container Road, connecting Vallarpadam islands to Kalamasserry. Alternately, the venue can be reached through NH 17, passing through Edappally, Paravur and via Vypin, Munambam, Malyankara after crossing the Goshri bridges. The venue is around 23 km. away from Cochin International Airport, via Athani, Manjali, Paravur, Chennamangalam.
