Also known as Pavagadh or 'fire hill' in old inscription, Pavagadh is the strongest hill fortress of ancient Gujarat, located 49 km from Vadodara in the district of Godhra. Kalika Mata Temple devoted to Goddess Kali is situated at the peak of this hill. Belonging to 10th-11th century, it is one of the most sacred center of Hindu pilgrimages. The ancient fort of Champaner, which was the medieval capital of Gujarat and seat of Chavda Kingdom is at the foot of the hill.
