Baisakhi festival celebrated in the month of April is of special significance
to the Sikh community. It was on this day that Guru Gobind Singh founded
the 'Khalsa' (Sikh brotherhood). The holy book of the Sikhs, 'Granth Sahib'
is taken in a procession, led by the 'Panj Pyaras' (five senior Sikhs)
who are symbolic of the original leaders. The occasion is marked by a
lot of feasting and merry making. In the countryside farmers start harvesting
with great jubilation. The Bhangra dance is a common sight in the villages
where men and women dance to the rhythmic beat of drums.
Dusshera and Diwali as well as the birth and death anniversaries
of the gurus and saints are also celebrated enthusiastically.
