Lion Safari Park/Krishnagiri Upvan/Sanjay Gandhi National Park (35
km)
The National Park, also called Krishnagiri Upvan, has the Gandhi Smriti Mandir
on Pavilion Hill. The Lion Safari Park gives visitors an opportunity to watch
the Indian Lion from special, closed vehicles. The Lion Safari Park is open to
all days, except Monday. Closed on Tuesday if Monday happens to be a public
holiday. Entry to the park allowed only on Safari vehicles from 0900 to
1700hrs, each trip lasting for about half an hour.
Madh Island
Madh island is a beautiful island off the coast of Juhu, in
the picturesque rural area of Mumbai's northwestern coast. One has to take a
ferry from the fishing village to reach the island. Just 30 minutes ride away
from the suburbs, it is a quick and peaceful getaway from the maddening crowds
of the city. One could spend time strolling along the sea shore and exploring
fishing villages. Though the place has a number of sandy beaches, it is not safe
for swimming because of the strong currents and shifting sands. There are a number of resorts
and bungalows of the upper class here.
Marve beaches
The picturesque rural area of Mumbai's northwestern coast is
dotted with tiny beaches. Marve village with its clean beaches and beautiful
bungalows is a popular spot, close to the city. A little further away are the more popular beaches of Gorai and
Manori in the respective villages. Low hills along the beaches offer spectacular
views of sunrise and sunset.
Access : Malad, a suburban railway station of the Western Railway, is the nearest
railhead. 40 kms from Mumbai via Malad. Ferry services from Marve Beach to Manori Beach
is available.
Matheran Hill Resort (105 km)
Matheran is a fascinating hill-station close to Mumbai. It is an undulating
hilltop cloaked in shady trees, that sprawls languidly at an altitude of 800
m.
Access: A motorable road has been constructed and is open to light
vehicle traffic. Trains available from Mumbai CST (Victoria Terminus) to Neral
and then to Matheran.
Powai and Vihar Lakes
Access: 26.6 and 28km respectively by suburban electric train to Kurla
or Andheri and then by road. Buses from Andheri Railway Station on Sunday are
holidays.
Tansa Lake (103 km)
The quiet but immense water spread of the lake, is an eye-catching spectacle and
a perennial source of water to Tansa wildlife
sanctuary. The lake and sanctuary is 25km from Mahuli village. Mahuli is
located 92km north east of Mumbai. Close to the lake is the Mahuli fort.
Access: By Mumbai suburban electric train to Asangaon and thence
14.4km by road. By road take NH3 from Mumbai to Asangaon/ Shahapur. Turn left to
the state road, from there it is a 15minutes ride to Mahuli.
U-Tan Sea-side Resort (74 kms)
Sits atop a cliff overlooking Utan fishing village, the sea and an old
lighthouse.
Access: Motor launches available from New Ferry Wharf.
Vaitarna Lake and Dam (122 km)
The dam forms a massive lake fringed with by thick woods. A good picnic sport.
Access: By suburban electric train to Khardi and thence 12.8km by road.
Vajreshwari Hot Springs/Ganeshpuri Ashram
Vajreshwari is known for its hot springs, the temple of Goddess Vajreshwari
and the ashrams of Swami Muktananda and Swami Nityanand. It is a famous health
resort and also a spiritual centre and visited by thousands. They are said to
posses medicinal qualities.
Access: By suburban electric train to Bassein Road and thence 28.9km by road,
or to Thane and thence 33.7km by road. State Transport buses available on Saturday
afternoons, Sunday and holidays from Mumbai.
