Dear Sir I have fixed deposits in the bank. Since the interest earned on these fixed deposits exceeds Rs.10000/- the bank is supposed to deduct income tax. In the month of January 2009 I had requested the bank to deduct tax as applicable for the financial year 2008-2009 The bank was deducting tax on actual interest earned but from year 2008-2009 I am inofmed that the tax is to be deducted on accrual basis and not on the interest paid/credited. With this system being followed, the bank has deducted tax on accrual basis.as well on actual interest paid. I had asked the bank where from the balance tax (tax deducted on acrtual calculated is deducted. I was informed orally that the amounts have been deducted from the fixed deposits although I had told them much in advance to deduct tax from my savings bank account if falls short. It is unfortunate that the amount of deposists which were placed at particular fixed interest is reduced by the tax amount calculated on accrual basis, there by I am deprived of my principal amount loosing interest for the amount which they deducted from fixed deposits. I was told it is the system that deducts the tax due from the fixed deposit amount. No notice was given to me and was told that the tax payable is deducted from the principal amounts of deposits. With this the principal amount of deposits has been reduced by the bank causing me cumulative financial loss till the tenuare of the deposit or maturity of deposit. I am senior citizen and I broke my deposits from Senior citizem scheme and placed fixed deposits with the bank since rates offered were attractive. Nothing has been given in writing that the tax has been adjusted against the amounts of the fixed deposits. I feel this as very unfair practice In fact in January itself I requested to debit my savings bank account regularly, but I was informed the system does not accept this and it will recover the amount from the principal amount of fixed deposit. I shall be obliged if you will kindly advise me whether the bank is correct in doing so without my consent or knowledge. You may advise me who is the authority to whom I can make representation on the unfair means of depriving the rightful amount of deposits of the investor/customers. Any other information if required I shall furnish you the same. Incidentally I may mention that some of the banks pay quarterly interests only on 31st March, 31st June, 31 September, and 31 st December, and deduct tax accordingly. but the problem comes when the bank pays interest on the dates when the 3 months are over when deposits is made for interest on quarterly basis.
T shall be greatful if you will kindly advise me.
