Manipal University initiated a Bachelor’s course in Jewellery design and management in 2005 through the Manipal Institute of Jewellery Management. In keeping with the reputation of being a leader, the university ventured to start the course, which was and still is the only one of its kind in the country, offering a full-fledged three-year graduation programme. The institute is power-packed with the right combination of the latest curriculum, knowledgeable faculty both from the world of academia as well as the sector, and the very best in infrastructure.



Students not only learn the art of jewellery designing but are also taught the skill to comprehend market temperaments while identifying consumer needs. Graduates from the institute are prepared to not only find placement in successful jewellery houses but also become entrepreneurs in the sector. The university knew that the decision to commence the course was a step in the right direction, when the first batch of its students received excellent placement in top jewellery companies in India.

Faculty and facilities:

The faculty comprises highly qualified and experienced professionals drawn from academics and industry. Fashion and jewellery designers of national/ international repute are invited as associate faculty to update and expose the students with the latest in the field. Manipal University has world-class facilities and infrastructure including a state-of-art workshop and high-tech computerised designing centre. It has a well stocked library with a provision of accessing online business magazines and periodicals. The institute also has a placement/ entrepreneurship development cell to assist the students, who are trained in the art of designing and manufacturing skills.

Besides the professional skills of Business Management, Computerised Accounting, etc. students are also exposed to the art of design of traditional and fashion jewellery including:
• Gem Testing, Analysis and Grading
• The skills of manufacturing gold and platinum ornaments of global standards
• Qualified and experience faculty from industry
• Inputs from fashion and jewellery designers of national and international repute
• Use of latest technology and aids including CAD, CAM
• Specialisation in chain making, stamping, blanking and forging, etching, casting, reticulation, enameling, inlaying, catches and joints, repousse and chasing, polishing, oxidizing, anodizing and engraving
• Hands-on practicals in designing and manufacturing
