Project management is vital to the success of any business, regardless of the size or scale of the projects they are undertaking. Prior to beginning a project, it is important to establish an expected timescale, the aims of the project and the steps required to complete it. Continual assessment of the project’s progress through its duration is vital for successful completion. However, project management does not simply focus on achieving the desired end result, it is also about completing a project in the most efficient manner. Like all areas of business, project management is changing constantly. These are the latest trends in project management this year.

Agile Management

Agile management, which was previously a technique only used in software development, involves a project

being broken into small sections. It is completed in stages, which allows the evaluation of the project as it progresses. Each stage is usually scheduled to take two weeks, although this can vary from business to business, and the next stage is determined by the outcome of the previous step. An agile project is far more flexible than one which is under traditional management techniques alone.

Collaboration

Traditional project management software is being replaced by collaborative counterparts, such as Slack. The key benefit of collaborative project management is the ability for all users to adapt and change plans as a project progresses. The downside is that many of these software programmes are not designed for project management use specifically, therefore the business might have to adjust them to suit their needs. Clear guidelines must be given for all users to ensure there is no confusion, for example deciding whether to use a ‘mentions’ system similar to other social media platforms or an alternative method of communicating.

Emotional Intelligence

Known as a ‘soft skill’, emotional intelligence is the ability for an individual to manage their own emotions and those of their colleagues and peers. Project managers need to be skilled in Emotional Intelligence in order to improve employee’s engagement and keep team members on board for the duration of a project. This is also a valuable skill for solving problems creatively. It has become increasingly important in environments were projects are high pressure and levels or workplace stress are high.

Working Remotely

Remote working is becoming increasing popular in project management. This is because most employers prefer to work without constant supervision. Many companies are increasing the number of staff members working remotely so projects develop creatively and at a faster pace. However, this is only appropriate for certain industries and will require a highly motivated team in order for the project to stay on target.

In the future, project management is likely to become heavily dependent on mobile technology. However, it is too early to establish the direction this will take.
