GMAT is precisely a test of the suitability of a candidate to join management courses through the process of an entrance test. The score in this test decides the admission of a candidate in reputed business schools in the USA and Canada. Hence, it is imperative that one must devise a systematic plan to approach the test. This article deals exclusively with the strategies and the tips one can adopt to crack the GMAT Reading Comprehension section comfortably.

Generally, the GMAT reading comprehension passages are long, obscure and are asked from subjects like Science, Social Science and Business. Besides, we find four main types of GMAT questions: Factual, Inference based, Main Idea and Tone based. Factual questions are relatively easier since one can find the answer directly in the lines. But Inference questions are not based on clearly presented facts and require a candidate to draw conclusions from supporting information. Main idea questions test a candidate’s understanding of the overall theme of the passage and appear a bit difficult to answer. Tone based questions require a candidate to find the tone of the passage which is generally positive or neutral in most of the cases.

So, one must keep all the above points in mind before attempting the GMAT RC section. It is suggested that a candidate uses scrap papers to jot down the main points of each paragraph which helps later in remembering all important information in the passage. Since the GMAT is a Computer Adaptive Test and one can view the first question along with the passage on the monitor. So, one must read the first question attentively so as to get an idea of what exactly one needs to find out in the passage while reading it. One must be good at skimming and be able to identify the types of passage he is attempting and the viewpoints of the author. This helps in answering those questions correctly where the test-makers often try to confuse the students by providing nearly same ideas in all answer choices. While approaching the test, one should frequently ask a question to oneself like What is the central theme of the passage? What is that the author wants to highlight? What is his point of view? etc. The application of these strategies coupled with one’s attention for detail would really prove beneficial to optimize one’s score in this section.
