World Heritage Day Special: Have a look at India's iconic monuments

Every year, April 18 is observed as World Heritage Day. In India, the day is dedicated to raising awareness about conserving the country’s rich cultural diversity. The day is also dedicated to preserving human heritage, diversity, and global landmarks and heritage sites. On this day, efforts are also directed towards encouraging people to appreciate cultural diversities and heritage and ensuring the preservation and protection of heritage sites. This World Heritage Day, let's have a look at some of India's iconic monuments which stand as symbols of national pride;

Taj Mahal, Agra

One of the 'Seven Wonders of the World', White Marble Mughal Architecture, the Taj Mahal was built by emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife, Mumtaj. It is located at the bank of river Yamuna in Agra. This monument probably is the most recognised in the world for its association with Indian heritage sites.

Ajanta Caves, Maharashtra

One of the first World Heritage sites in India, the Ajanta Caves date back to around 2nd century BCE to 650 CE and consist of the most beautiful masterpieces of 31 rock-cut Buddhist cave monuments, paintings and sculptures. The caves were built in two different phases.

Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh

Located in Madhya Pradesh, Khajuraho is a famous UNESCO World Heritage site in India. Khajuraho is a unique heritage site which is renowned for a group of Hindu and Jain Temples situated 175 km south-east of Jhansi.

Sun Temple, Odisha

Not very far from the famous beach town of Puri, the Sun Temple at Konark is a 13th-century temple situated in Konark, Odisha. The Sun Temple is in the shape of a gigantic chariot with carved stone wheel, pillars and walls and is led by six enormously carved horses.

Hampi, Karnataka

Hampi is a UNESCO World Heritage site located in the Northern part of Karnataka. It lies within the ruins of the ancient, prosperous kingdom of Vijayanagar. The ruins at Hampi are a collection of heritage sites depicting the excellent Dravidian style of art and architecture.
