Gangtok Government Cottage Industries Inst. Khabelongstok Monasteries How to Reach Entry Permit Tourist Information Centres

Sikkim, a mystical wonderland of  spectacular natural beauty perches in the lap of eastern Himalayas and spread below the Mount Khanchendzonga, world's third highest peak (8,586 meteres). Mount Khanchendzonga, which can be viewed from every corner of the state is honoured as the abode of their guardian deity Dzo-nga. In the past few years, Sikkim has become the most preferred tourist destination of people from all over the world. Though remains as the second smallest state of India, Sikkim has to offer her visitors an array of experiences such as amidst spectacular terrain, snow-capped Himalayas, pristine lakes, luxuriant forests, roaring rivers and gentle streams, lush valleys, and cleanliness which is beyond words. 'Sikkim' commonly attributed to the Tsong word 'Su-Khim' means New or Happy House. Sikkim has a lot of open monasteries, chortens, flying prayer flags and lofty stupas all giving a tinge of mysticism.

As far as the tourism is concerned, this wonderful land is most suited for nature lovers, interested in relaxing holidays with all comforts. Sikkim is also a haven for adventure seekers which offers an expedition of adventure and discovery if one wishes to undertake trekking, rafting, mountaineering or mountain biking. Visitors can spend days in splendid isolation in many places at short distances from the main hubs of Gangtok, Namchi, Magan and Gyalshing. Sikkim Government and local NGOs has taken initiatives to bring out the benefits of Tourism to the villages.

Trekking in Sikkim has its own charm. Trail runs through rich biodiversity and rich cultural life of Sikkimese people. There are numerous trails, which is classified as  Monastic Trek, Rhododendron Trek, Khangchendzonga Trek, Coronation Trek, Khedi Trek, Himalayan Trek, etc. One can undertake mountaineering in these peaks with special permits from the concerned authority. May to October is the ideal season for mountaineering in Sikkim. The entrance to the state of Sikkim is at the border town of Rongpo which is located in the Tista valley. Rongpo is a small town famous for the liquors and wines produced here. It is a great market for oranges.

March-May and October-December are the best times to visit. Bring light woolen clothing during summer ( maximum temperature 20.7 degrees Celsius) and heavy woolen during winter (minimum 7.7 degrees).
