Vanilla

In Hindi : Vainilla
Vanilla is a seed pod of a tropical climbing orchid. The name vanilla comes from the Spanish Vainilla, meaning 'little pod'. Vanilla is one of the few contributions of the western hemisphere to the world of spices. The spice was introduced in India during the mid 19th Century.

Vanilla is highly fragrant with an exotic aroma. Vanilla is extensively used throughout the world in foods, confectionary, pharmaceuticals and beverages. Used almost exclusively in sweet cookery, vanilla is added to cakes, biscuits, puddings and desserts.

The best quality grows in locations with good drainage, adequate humus and an annual rainfall of 75-100 inches. Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu are the main Vanilla producing states in India.

Natural vanilla flavouring extract or essence is made by finely chopping the beans or pods and infusing them by dripping alcohol on the pieces. With its pleasing appearance and high Vanillin content, Indian Vanilla is poised for world-wide export.
