Shriram Shankarlal Music Festival or Shriram
Shankarlal Sangeet Sammelan is one of the earliest Indian Classical musical events
held in Delhi for the past six decades. It could be one among the first
classical vocal and instrumental music events organised after attaining
independence. The Sammelan which began as a small concert with an
informal gathering of musicians at Sumitra Charat Ram's house at Delhi's
Curzon Road has now become a forum for the talented youth alongside the
most authentic traditional musicians. Sumitra Charat Ram is also the
founder patron of Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra, a premier cultural
institute in Delhi.
The three day festival is held at Kamani Auditorium, Copernicus Marg in Central
Delhi every year in March- April. The auditorium with a seating capacity of
over 600 people gets
packed with music enthusiasts who has high expectations, from around the country during the event.
The music fest is organised by Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra, also located in
the same complex as that of the Kamani auditorium. Ever since its inception,
the preservation of the country’s cultural heritage and the promotion of
performing arts has been the active concern of the Kendra.
This heritage event has seen the likes of a number of
eminent music maestros including Ustad Hafeez Ali Khan, Bade Ghulam Ali Khan,
Pandit Ravi Shanker, M.S Subbulakshmi and so on.
