Asin alias Asin Thottumkal, the talented actress cum model, from
Kerala is an upcoming
heroine in the Tamil film industry. Before entering into films, she
was a part-time model and businesswoman.
She started modeling at the age of 14 and is trained
in Bharatnatyam and folk dance. She debuted into the movie world in
2001, in the Malayalam film "Narendaran Makan Jayakanthan Vaka"
directed by Sathyan Anthikkad. Then she did a number of movies in Telugu
including 'Amma Nana O Tamila Ammai' (2003) for which she received the
Filmfare Best Actress award, 'Sivamani 98480 22338' (2003), 'Lakshmi
Narasimha' (2004), 'Gharshana' (2004), 'Chakram' (2005) etc.
In Tamil, she had problems initially with her first movie 'Ullam
Ketkumae' being cancelled and another movie 'Chennaiyil Oru Mazhaikalam'
with Surya being stalled. But the scenario changed with the release of 'M. Kumaran son of
Mahalakshmi' which became one of the biggest hits in 2005. After that
she was flooded with offers from well known directors and there was no
looking back.
Asin won the hearts of the Tamil audience with her captivating performance
in the super hit movie 'Ghajini'
(2005). After seeing her superb performance in Ghajini, Aamir Khan,
super star in Bollywood, has invited her to act the female lead in its
Hindi version. Her 2005 Diwali releases 'Sivakasi' and 'Majaa'
were also declared hits. Asin has become selective in her roles and
has had a steady career so far with many upcoming films and that too
with top stars. She has also been signed to endorse the products of Pepsi in
India. Now this charming starlet is riding high in Tamil as well
as Telugu films.
