Road

Another different film from the production house of innovative film maker Ram Gopal Verma .. The story inspired by Hollywood flicks, literally takes place on the road.

Two college sweethearts Arvind (Vivek Oberoi) and Lakshmi (Antara Mali) are on the run from their home town in Rajasthan when Lakshmi's father opposes their relationship. They take off in a Tata safari to get married in Jodhpur. But incidents that happen during the journey topple their plans.

The couple meet some strange characters on the way like Vijay Raaz, a mysterious villager and Babu (Manoj Bajpai) who convinces them to give a lift. Once on the road Babu's eccentricity shows through in his irritating behavior; he chain smokes in the car despite their disapproval, forces them to keep his choice of music and to stop for food.

Babu even makes a pass at Lakshmi and when Arvind protests, he shows his true colours by pulling out a gun forcing Arvind out of the car. He takes off with Lakshmi leaving Arvind stranded on the desert road. A helpless Arvind seeks help in a friendly trucker (Makrand Deshpande) who helps him rescue her. But Babu strikes back and takes off with Lakshmi again. This time Arvind gets the help of the cops while Lakshmi is left to deal with the maniac.

The first half of the film keeps you at the edge of your seat. The thrills, the effects, the background music, cinematography.. everything is slick through out the film but the script suffers in the second half. Post interval, the film focuses too much on Manoj Bajpai and his change of character, while Vivek Oberoi is pushed to the background. But the director deserves full credit for the perfect execution of shots. Cinematographer Sudeep Chatterjee, background scorer Amar Mohile and Arun Nambiar for the sound effects deserve special mention for their excellent contribution to the film.

The actors have done their parts well.. Manoj Bajpai is in top form as the eccentric creep Babu, Vivek Oberoi impresses with his convincing act. He makes a good pair with Anthara Mali, his costar in 'Company '. Makrand Deshpande as the jovial truck driver and Rajpal Yadav does well.

A film watchable just for its technical finesse and novel theme.
