'Dewangee' directed by Anees Bazmee is inspired in part by the Hollywood movie 'Primal Fear' starring Richard Gere and Edward Norton with a love triangle woven in and very similar in the second half to our own 'Darr' directed by Yash Chopra.
Raj Goyal (Akshaye Khanna) is a successful lawyer committed for justice. A workaholic who is so involved in his career, he keeps his mothers wish for settling down at bay. But all that changes when he meets Sargam (Urmila Matondkar) a popular singer at a music company bash. He falls for the lovely damsel

Meanwhile Ashwin Mehta ( Vijayendra Ghatge) a music company owner gets brutally murdered in his home. The suspect Tarang Bhardwaj (Ajay Devgan), a budding music director, is caught red handed running away from the scene of the crime. Tarang who is a childhood friend and mentor of Sargam claims to be innocent. Sargam hires Raj to defend him. He gets to know Tarang and is convinced that he is innocent. Raj has to find the real killer to prove it. But the dangerous mystery that unfolds when he goes deep into the matter is astonishing.. and that's the main plot of the movie.

The events in the first half, has been handled skillfully and paced well. The novel plot i.e at least in Bollywood, at times has an impact and is interesting. But the script fails to keep the tempo in the second half. The climax is predictable and the second half has some plot holes.

The performance of both the lead actors are praiseworthy. Akshaye Khanna proves his mettle once again. This is one actor who has talent and is admirable as the suave Raj. Ajay also is impressive especially in certain sequences when his split personality is revealed- he has handled the personality changes with ease. Urmila looks good as always and does her part well in an otherwise male dominated film. Seema Biswas as the Psychiatrist, and Tanaz Currim and Suresh Oberoi are okay.

Ismails Durbars music is disappointing barring one or two numbers.. could have been better with the musical background of the storyline. But the background score is good as well the cinematography.

Although not comparable to its original, the movie is a thriller with enough suspense to keep the audience captive.. a watch-able entertainer. .
