Joe has a mysterious past as well as a relationship with a woman Cathie
(Emily Mortimer). Flashbacks take us back to the incident of Joe and
Les fishing out a near naked body of a drowned woman from the canal
who was Cathie. Although Joe denies any knowledge of previously knowing
the person, the incident starts some serious disturbances in him. Joe
seduces the sexually unsatisfied Ella and they have an affair. Joe is
looking for more and more sex and when Ella's sister Gwen ( Therese
Bradley) shows up, he has sex with her as well. He uses sex as a way
to add some colour to his extremely sad, lonely life, although he does
not seem to get any great deal of pleasure from it.
Subsequent investigation about the dead body of Cathie, becomes a
murder trial that comes back to Joe which confirms that he had a relationship
with her and that he may be involved in her death. Now, Joe had to confront
the truth or an innocent man might get executed for the crime.
The movie deals with a politically correct and sexually suppressed
era as well as a darker side of the human behavior in which sex becomes
a substitute for emotion which is characterized by Joe's frequent coupling.
Even though, Ewan McGregor plays a sociopath and sex maniac, he does
an excellent job in showing his charm as a man who is irresistible to
women. The movie has beautiful cinematography as well as excellent performance
by the talented cast.
As the movie is rated NC-17, with nudity, sex and adult theme ,we
recommend it only for the grown-ups. We rate this movie Good.
