'Van Helsing' is a spectacular, adventurous, high tech version of horror classics Dracula/Frankenstein/Wolf Man. The veteran director try to put all three classic monsters together into on epic adventure film.

Hugh Jackman plays Van Helsing, who is a monster killer, who after a badly done job in Notre Dame Cathedral moves to Vatican City to get the supply of high tech weapons and instructions for his next job. From there he moves to Transylvania together with his dedicated friar Carl.

They arrive in the village where they almost get killed but is saved by three flying vampiresses who want to scoop up their victims and suck their blood, but Van Helsing fight them off. This leads to his meeting with the bold and beautiful Anna Valerious (Kate Beckinsale) and her brother Velkan ( Will Kemp) who are the two surviving members of a gypsy royalty. That family is suffering from an age old curse that can only be broken when Count Dracula is put to death. Even though Anna is suspicious of VanHelsing in the beginning, later they become partners in the adventurous mission to kill Dracula and thousands of his vampire children. The rest of the story you have to discover by yourself.

It is an excellent idea to combine the classics Dracula/Frankenstein/ Wolf Man and make a new theme out of it with a modern twist. But Stephen Sommers has very much underutilized this new idea. Jackman and Kate delivers a great performance and the computer generated images are great but the plots keeps twisting and turning.

The old classics were thrilling and scary even for adults, but Van Helsing could be an entertainer for the kids with it's endless loop. Without a workable story, just the actions will not make a good movie. May be Stephen Sommers' intention is to make it into a sequel, in that case, hopefully the next one will be better. If you are a monster fan, you may like this movie.
