It is a murder mystery and a romantic love story as well as the political
intrigue played against international pharmaceutical companies.
Justin Quayle played by Ralph Fiennes is a diplomat with the British High
commission in Kenya and his wife, Tessa Quayle (Rachel Weisz) has died
in a car accident. Her colleague, Arnold Bluhm (Hubert Kounda), a local
Kenyan doctor who accompanied her and with whom she is rumored to have
an affair, is still missing. Flashbacks takes us to the beginning of Justin
and Tessa's romance and marriage.
Justin is a shy and mild mannered diplomat who loves gardening and Tessa
is a sexy, beautiful and intelligent woman who fights against injustice
in African countries. Justin and Tessa met in London and after a short
period of courtship, sex and love, they get married. Justin took her back
with him to Africa where she started her
fight for the poor and under privileged Africans.
Tessa found out that in many hospitals around Africa, pregnant women are
treated with a drug called Dypraxa which is also used as a medication
for tuberculosis by the poor people. Many pregnant women lost their children
without any reasons. Tessa and Arnold suspected that there is some connection
between drug trials and the related deaths. They had been working to get
the necessary information for fighting with the drug manufacturers.
When Justin came to know about Tessa's investigations about international
pharmaceutical companies he suspected that her death was a murder. Once
he started his own investigations, he realized that there are so many
international players involved in the conspiracy. Find out how Justin
is going to solve the mystery about his wife's death.
Director Fernando Meirrrelles skillfully narrates a murder mystery with
great talent. He builds the conspiracy theory against the pharmaceutical
companies with great realism. He has got together a group of talented
actors and has drawn great performance out of them.
Ralph Fiennes as Justin presents an excellent performance. He very well
portray the calmness as well as the desperation of a troubled diplomat.
But Rachel Weisz as Tessa steals the show. She is beautiful, brilliant,
bold and a determined social activist.
The film throws some light on the greed and bad practices of the international
pharmaceutical companies. It also deals with the gap between the rich
and the poor as well as the massive corruption that is still going on
in many African countries. The movie has nudity, sexual contents, bad
language as well as some violence but as an entertainer it is really good.
We rate this movie VERY GOOD.
