Set in 1990, this drama follows the saga of a Vietnamese young man who sets on a journey from Vietnam to United States in search of his American dad.

Damien Nguyen plays Binh, a twenty year old young man living with his foster parents in Vietnam. He was called Bui Doi which means "Less than dust" a term that were used for the Vietnamese children of American serviceman. When Binh learns that his mother Mai (Chau Thi Kim) is alive and is living in Ho Chi Min City, he takes off to the Capital to find her. His mother was overwhelmed with joy to see him.

Mai has a young son Tam (Tran Dang Quoc Thine) and she is working for a rich Vietnamese family. She gets Binh a job as a houseboy with the same family. She also told him that his American father (Nick Nolte) just disappeared from Saigon one day and is now living in Texas, USA. And then there was a household tragedy that put the blame on Binh and he had to flee from that country. Mai gave him whatever money she had and asks him to take Tam with him to United States.

Binh and Tam joined other people fleeing on a fishing boat that took them to a Malaysian refugee camp. From Malaysia to New York, they traveled on a rusty ship together with many other "Boat People". Many of them died on the ship, including his little brother Tam.

Once Binh reached New York, he was forced into slavery, working as a busboy in China town, in order to pay for his trip. When he came know that as a son of an American G.I. he was entitled to get a free flight in USA and that there was no need to go through all suffering that he went through, he walks out of his job in anger and takes off to Texas in search of his father. Find out more about the saga of this young man and what will happen to him.

Director Hans Petter Moland masterfully narrates a poignant drama, a tale of an unfortunate young man. He draws great performance out of the cast and the characters are vividly drawn. He tries to show the world, the after effects of a terrible war. The agony of thousands of people during their journey to "The Beautiful Country", the promised land, is very well shown.

Damien Nguyen as Binh, presents an excellent performance. Binh as an emigrant, his high hopes, struggle, sufferings, determination and dignity are very well portrayed. He is telling the story of millions of Asians who had gone through similar journey to get to this "Beautiful Country". It is an emotionally vibrant tale with a great cast and a great director. The movie shows how people are forced to give up their dignity and grace in order to stay alive. It will definitely make you wonder about the arduous journey and sufferings of many other immigrant "Binh's".

We rate this movie GOOD.
