Based on the Polish novel by Stanislaw Lem, which had been filmed once before in Russian-language, director Steven Soderbergh's 'Solaris' is a classic science fiction. Dr. Kris Kelvin (George Clooney), a psychiatrist is sent to a fact finding mission to space station 'Prometheus', orbiting the planet Solaris. The research crew had lost contact with Earth after the Commander Gibarian (Ulrich tucker) who also happens to be Kelvin's friend, commits suicide and the two remaining survivors are haunted by visions and 'visitors' (clones) of their past, possibly created by the Solaris itself.
Once on board Dr.Kelvin discovers a haunted ship. Two live crew members are suffering from extreme stress and paranoia and on the verge of insanity. When Kelvin awakens after his first night on board, his wife Rheya (Natascha McElhone), is in bed with him. Earlier on Earth, Kelvin had a troubled marriage and Rheya had committed suicide. 'She is not human' warns crew member Dr.Helen Gordon (Viola Davis).

Kelvin gets back not his dead wife, but a being in flesh and blood reconstructed from his own memories - who knows everything about his dead wife and shares memories with him. Although he realises that his wife is not a reality, to destroy her would be inhuman. So instead of solving the mystery, he becomes rapt in it.. lured at the prospect of getting a second chance in his life.

The movie shot beautifully, presents a painful paradox out of the real life. It explores issues of mortality, God and eternity. 'Solaris' is a story of romance extending beyond the grave and it is exploration of a vast cosmic mystery. The couples earlier life is shown in glimpses as flashback. Due to the nature of the plot most part of the story is a repeat of the original. Like any other science fiction, this movie also run on great imaginations and big ideas. George Clooney and Natascha McElhone give elegant performances.

There are a lot of questions left unanswered. If you are a Sci-Fic lover, you will enjoy this movie otherwise don't waste your time and money.
