Inspired by the 1967 comedy "The Graduate", it is a romantic comedy
that deals with the life of a journalist struggling with her identity.
Sarah Huttinger (Jennifer Aniston) is a beautiful, young New York
journalist whose career has hit a dead end. She promised to marry her
boyfriend Jeff (Mark Ruffalo) which she has kept as a secret from her
family members living in Pasadena, California. But she decided to attended
her sister Annie's (Mena Suvari) wedding together with Jeff.
Sarah has a very strange relationship with her family members and she
lost her mother a long time ago. When Sarah and Jeff reached Pasadena,
as usual she felt at odd with her grandmother Katharine (Shirley MacLaine)
who never let any of the kids call her grandmother, and Sarah always
wondered why. But Katharine told Sarah that her daughter (Sarah's mother),
got cold feet and ran away to Mexico with a guy just three days before
her wedding. With this much of clue, Sarah wants to find out who
this guy is, who could be possibly her father.
With her journalistic skills, Sarah digs into some family secrets and
finds out more truth about her mother as well as grandmother. She also
found out more about a guy named Beau Burroughs (Kevin Costner), now
a San Francisco based Internet millionaire, who had bedded her mother
as well as her grandmother. Now Sarah is convinced that in the original
story of "The Graduate", her mother was Elaine Robinson, her grandmother
was Mrs. Robinson and Beau Burroughs was the original Benjamin Braddock
and her father. But when Sarah met Beau, her fatherly love turned into
an obsession. Find out whether Sarah is also going to have a romantic
relationship with Beau and will she find her true identity.
Director
Rob Reiner tries hard to narrate a complicated romantic love story that
involves a big family secret. It is an unusual tale of a man who had
bedded three generations of Sarah's female family members. The director
has assembled a high profile cast but due to the complication of the
story, he couldn't draw a decent performance out of all of them.
Jennifer Aniston as Sarah presents a decent performance. As a woman
in distress her anxiety and frustrations are well played. As usual,
Kevin Costner is good. But Shirley MacLaine as the grandmother steals
the show and delivers an excellent performance.
The movie has it's own flaws, starting with a complicated story and
bad script. But as an entertainer it has it's own funny moments and
good laughs. If you are a fan of Jennifer Aniston or Kevin Costner or
Shirley MacLaine you will enjoy this film.
