Red Dragon

Director
: Brett Ratner
Screenwriter

'Red Dragon' a movie based on the novel by Thomas Harris, introduces once again the evil character Hannibal Lecter, who has been filmed before in 'Man Hunter' the original version, in which Brian Cox played Lecter
Ratner opens the film with the profile of a FBI agent Will Graham's (Edward Norton) chronology of how psychiatrist-turned-serial cannibal, Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) was first caught. In that incident Graham almost lost his life and he decided to quit his job and retire. Later, Graham reluctantly agrees to go to work and assist the FBI to catch a gruesome murderer nicknamed 'Tooth Fairy'.

Graham soon realizes that the most effective way to catch the serial killer, Francis Dolarhyde (Ralph Fiennes) is to go back to the incarcerated Lecter and seek his help to know the killers mind. But Lecter has his own agenda. 'Tooth Fairy' who calls himself 'Red Dragon' and Lecter are formidable adversaries. Red Dragon gets distracted from his murderous plans because of the relationship with a fellow employee at the place where he works. Blind Rebac McClane (Emily Watson) brings out the human being in him. Well, almost..

This movie is as good as the brilliant masterpiece 'The Silence Of the Lambs'. There is so much suspense that can shake anyone for a while after seeing the movie. The director deserves full credit for making the film better than the book.  It has a good sense of humanity than the original novel..

The screenwriter Ted Tally, who won an Oscar for his 'Silence Of The Lambs' script, has again done an impressive job in this film. Anthony Hopkins in his third role as Hannibal Lector (earlier in 'Silence of the Lambs' and 'Hannibal') is excellent, showing the infinite range of his acting skill given the same character again and again. Its a disgrace that we don't get to see him much in the movie. Fiennes is also convincing as the tooth fairy- there are scenes where Fiennes is quite scary. The sick mans relationship with his blind co-worker is touchingly portrayed. Will Graham as Edward Norten gives an credible performance and Rebac McClane as the Emily Watson has done her part well.

A powerful thriller with a solid script, great cast and performances...  We rate the movie GOOD
