Every film of this sort has a group of girls with a characteristic
role. In this film, there is Kristen Dust's character, whose sole purpose
in life is to find a man to take care of her and to then create the
perfect 1950s household, her best friend, played by Julia Stiles, who
is torn between her dream of going to Yale Law School and her motherly
instincts, Maggie Gyllenhaal's character-- the brainy, yet promiscuous
female of every class and Marcia Gay Harden as a comically vacuous instructor
in the art of housewifery.
Even Roberts disappoints audiences as she is torn between choosing
a relationship with a loving and devoted man who is set on marrying
her, versus a womanizing colleague who is known for sleeping with his
students.
The movie has that very ?Good-bye Mr. Chips? tone to it, but doesn't
quite hit the mark. The sound track that accompanies the movie is quite
a mix of tones, which is quite good however. Hits include "Mona Lisa,"
"You Belong to Me," "Besame Mucho," "Secret Love" and "Istanbul (Not
Constantinople)? which may be worth checking out.
Overall, the characters played by these famous actresses are not added
to their credit. Is it more due to the screenplay or is it the acting
itself? Who knows?!?! We recommend that if you still have your heart
set on watching this film?rent it!
We give this a rating of poor.
