The movie is about New York City Public school students and how a
program on ballroom dancing changes their lives.
The movie follows three teams from three public schools,
representing students from different boroughs of New York City. One
of the schools belong to the upper strata of society, the other middle
class and the third comprises of children of immigrants mostly at the
poverty level. Many of these kids, mainly fourth and fifth graders took
up ballroom dancing very reluctantly at first but later learned dances
like merengue, foxtrot, tango, rumba and swing with great enthusiasm.
By the end of the school year, there is a city wide
dance competition for these kids. Chosen for the diversity of these
students, they face a tough competition to win the trophy. The dedication
and enthusiasm of the children is touching. Find out who will be the
stars in this year's competition.
Director
Marilyn Agrelo narrates a delightful story of a group of New York City
school kids who took ballroom dancing very seriously. Even though there
is no real suspense in the movie, debutant filmmaker Agrelo makes the
movie interesting, by focusing on students with different ethnicity
and background. Agrelo presents interesting characters like Emma, Cyrus,
Tara and Micky. Movie very well portray how discipline and enthusiasm
about dancing transform kids from bad neighborhood and background, to
behave decently. The importance of art in framing their lives is put
forth effectively.
The movie is inspiring and charming. Visually the
film is not that great but it has some entertainment value. Through
the movie we meet some hard working dedicated teachers. Basically the
film is all about love and dedication, and has great human value.
We rate this movie ABOVE AVERAGE.
