Ratings of her show are tanking and she has to come up with some
sensationalism to make the show a hit. At work, one of her colleagues
Barb (Holly Hunter) takes her under her wings and teaches Stacy all
the ropes for the first few weeks. Very soon, Stacy and Barb become
close friends.
Barb is a manipulative woman who doesn't trust men. Stacy starts
a new relationship with Derek (Ron Livingston) who is 10 years older
than her. Derek has had many affairs before he met Stacy, which he
has kept carefully hidden from her. Stacy discusses Derek with Barb.
Barb advices her to investigate Derek's past, saying "If you
want to keep your man, find out why they didn't". When her boyfriend
goes out of town on a business trip, leaving his Palm Pilot behind,
Barb urges Stacy to go through his Palm Pilot and she discovers pictures
and phone numbers of various women he had dated in the past. Stacy
decides to use her new findings about Derek's ex-girlfriends to pep
up her TV talk show. She brings in three of Derek' former lovers for
the TV interview on the pretence of doing a program on their personal
lives. Stacy finds out that one of them, a super model Lulu Fritz
( Josie Maran) used to have never ending bedroom sessions with Derek
and another woman, a chef, Joyce (Julianne Nicholson) still continues
to see Derek on a regular basis. Stacy gets enough proof that her
boyfriend is a fraud and is astonished by her findings.
Director, Nick Hurran, unfolds a story of deception at a soothe pace.
He portrays Stacy as a simple sweet woman and Derek as a cunning charmer,
very well. Carly Simon's hit tunes make the movie more delightful.
Most of the characters are practically wasted and the story lacks
reality. It is impossible for Derek to pretend to be a virgin when
he met Stacy, so why this sense of indignity? What is the need to
dig out more truths in such a relationship? The director could be
trying to send a message to the world "Trust But Verify"
and "Romance is just one element of life".
Murphy and Livingston present a decent performance. Other famous
members of the cast are wasted and present a mediocre performance.
If you are a Brittany fan, you will like it.
