A comedy with "Matrix" style effects is a period piece about a 1930s
era Shanghai village that was forced to defend itself from mobsters. It is in
Cantonese with English subtitles.
The story takes place in Shanghai when the city was run by the notorious Axe
Gang, a group of young men who terrorized the people of the city. The part of
the city named Pig Sty Alley that was controlled by a Landlord and his
Landlady, was the only place Axe Gang couldn't get in.
Stephen Chow plays Sing A gangster who wants to be part of the Axe Gang but he
doesn't have the necessary martial arts skills to join them. So he pretends to
be a member of the Axe Gang and with the help of his friend Lam TzeChung, tries
to shake down the city in their own way. This triggers a war between the real
Axe Gang and the Pig Sty Alley's residents who included veteran martial arts
champions.
Director,
writer, actor Stephen Chow who is a megastar in China, successfully
makes an almost cartoonish film with martial arts qualities. He uses
CGI effects extensively to make a great impact on the audience. He proves
himself not only as a great actor but also an efficient director. The
film may seem nutty outside but it's imagination and slyness are wonderful.
There is plenty of violence but it is mostly cartoonish. Very tactfully
he integrates the jokes into the story.
It is a good Kung Fu movie and fans of Kung Fu will have a great time. Even
if you are not a Kung Fu lover, you will have an enjoyable time.
We rate this movie GOOD.
