It is a comedy about a nice Jewish boy and his family who are planning
an extravagant 'bar mitzvah' (A ritual for a Jewish boy's entry into manhood)
for him.
Arnie Stein (Larry Miller) throws a 'bar mitzvah' for his 13 year old
son on a giant ocean cruiser with a theme of "The Titanic".
Adam Fiedler (Jeremy Piven) a Hollywood agent, a rival of Arnie, is totally
upset by this well arranged ocean party. He wanted to put down Steins,
with an even bigger and better 'bar mitzvah' party for his own son Benjamin
(Daryl Sabara).
Adam with the help of his wife Joanne (Jamie Gertz) planned an extraordinary
'bar mitzvah' with a "Baseball" theme to be held in the Dodger Stadium
that included a concert by Neil Diamond and the whole works.

But there are some problems
with this grant extravagant 'bar mitzvah'. Young Benjamin is basically
a shy boy and he feels embarrassed by all these attention and the big
ceremony. He was supposed to know enough Hebrew so that he can read his
part loud and clear, during the religious rites. Unfortunately he fails
to do it. More over his father is not in good terms with his grandfather
Irwin (Garry Marshall) but Benjamin decided to invite him anyway. When
Irwin showed up for the party with his free spirited girlfriend Sacred
Feather (Daryl Hannah), things get complicated. Find out what happens
with the grant 'bar mitzvah'.
Director Scott Marshall, son of prominent producer director Garry Marshall,
skillfully narrates a funny tale. He puts enough laughs into a serious
story and makes sure that there are enough emotional connections within
the tale. He makes use of the talents of the popular cast very well. He
successfully brings out the underlying satire of materialism associated
with 'bar mitzvah' and the true meaning of the ritual, in a funny way.
Filled with popular stars like Doris Roberts and Daryl Hannah there are
enough funny and beautiful moments. It is a funny Jewish comedy and will
be a crowd pleaser.
We rate this movie GOOD.
