A delightfully romantic
comedy based on the novel "If only it were true" by Marc Levy.
Elizabeth Masterson (Reese Witherspoon) is a young, hardworking doctor
at a San Francisco hospital. She in her late 20's, is still single and
puts in 26 hour shifts in the ER. She has just been appointed as the
attending physician at the same hospital. One day after the long working
hours she was on her way to attend a dinner party hosted by her sister
Abby (Dina Walters) where she is supposed to meet a potential date,
but unfortunately she has a head on collision with a truck and she looses
consciousness.
Elizabeth being in a coma, her dear ones decide to sublet the beautiful
apartment left behind by Elizabeth. The apartment has a lot of space
and a splendid view of San Francisco. David Abbott (Mark Ruffalo), a
landscape architect and widower sublets Elizabeth's apartment. David
has his own share of problems and he had been depressed and drinking.
More over David finds out that the apartment is still occupied by Elizabeth's
ghost.

Elizabeth
shows up occasionally and scolds him about the rings on the coffee table
and orders him to stop making a mess of her apartment. As the story
goes, David realizes that Elizabeth is not actually dead, but in a coma
and about to be detached from the life supporting machine. In desperation,
David hires an exorcist to get rid of Elizabeth. But on her part, she
is a lost soul who found love after falling into a coma and now she
wants to live and is pleading for help from David not to pull the plug
of her life support. Will David help her?. Will Elizabeth come back
to life?.
Director Mark Waters narrates a romantic tale with charm and charisma.
One of the lovers is in flesh and the other one incorporeal. By giving
the story a "Ghost" like scenario, he makes an unusual theme. He proves
himself that he can make decent romantic comedy with good humor. He
is trying to deliver a message to the younger generation that even in
coma, the soul will search and find their soul mate and love could bloom.
Reese Witherspoon as Elizabeth carries the film with a wonderful performance.
She is loveable, likeable and sociable and has good charisma. Mark Ruffalo
as David, an emotionally beaten man is good. Elizabeth and David make
a charming couple. The supporting stars are also very good.
The movie has it's own pitfalls. It is not quite "Heaven" but "just
like Heaven" and the title is very appropriate. It is a good date movie
for all ages.
We rate this movie GOOD.
