Based on the novel by Jennifer Weiner, it is the tale of two sisters who grew up together but end up being totally different people.
Rose (Toni Collette) and Maggie (Cameron Diaz) are two sisters raised
by their dad (Ken Howard) after their mother died in a car accident. Later
their father remarried another woman (Candice Azzara) who didn't care
much about Rose or Maggie. Rose turned out to be a successful Philadelphia
lawyer and the gorgeous Maggie a goofer with no job. Rose is hard working
and she had no time for outside life, while, Maggie a promiscuous, unruly
and lazy
bum.
When Maggie ran out of friends and relatives whom she can stay with, Rose let her
stay with her until Maggie gets a job. But soon Rose had to kick Maggie out of her apartment
right after Maggie beds a man who Rose just started dating. No where to go,
Maggie ended up at her father's house where she happened to find a stack of unopened
letters and cards for her and sister from their grandmother. Their dad had kept it a
secret that their maternal grandmother is still alive. Now, Maggie takes off to
Miami, Florida in search of her grandmother.

Maggie meets
her grandmother Ella (Shirley MacLaine) who in turn gets her a job and
introduces to her to an old blind professor (Norman Lloyd) who told Maggie
that she is suffering from dyslexia, which had caused most of her problems.
In the meantime, Rose left her law firm and took a job as a dog walker
which gave her more time to explore other interests in life. Find out
more about this touching story of sibling rivalry and the life they went
through before rediscovering themselves.
Talented director Curtis Hanson presents a typical story of sibling rivalry and
its after effects. He portrays the two sisters as polar opposites and has made the
characters look authentic by giving an emotional resonance to the story. He successfully
shows the world how people who grew up in the same household, getting the same love
and care, can end up as totally different people with totally different attitude towards
life.
Cameron Diaz as Maggie presents an excellent performance. She is lazy, wild,
irresponsible and silly. While Toni Collette as Rose is smart, hard working, ambitious
and responsible. The two actresses as sisters are a perfect match. Shirley MacLaine as the
grandmother Ella steals the show. She presents an Oscar worthy performance as the Supporting
Actress.
Movie might appear to be a chick flick but it has substance. With the mix of humor and
emotional vibrance, the director successfully presents a tale of love and
rivalry. Even if you are not a fan of Cameron Diaz, you will enjoy this film.
We rate this film GOOD.
