It is a comic, interracial love story, a loose remake of the 1967 romantic
comedy "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner".
Ashton Kutcher plays Simon Green a high flying Manhattan stock broker.
He is anxious to meet his girlfriend Theresa"s (Zoe Saldana) parents
for the first time. He is a white guy and Theresa is a black girl. To
make things worse, Theresa never told her parents that she is dating
a white guy. Her parents approval of this relationship is very important
to her.
Theresa's parents Percy Jones (Bernie Mac) and Marilyn (Judith Scott)
live in an elegant house in suburban New Jersey. They are about to throw
a party to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. When his daughter
arrived with a white boyfriend for the party, Percy and Marilyn has
the shock of their life. But once Percy got acquainted with Simon, he
liked the guy and was impressed by Simon's job and other prospects.
But the funny thing is that Simon never told any one including his girlfriend
that he just quit his job. Percy didn't question his daughter's decision
to have a white boyfriend and he started to develop a buddy buddy relationship
with Simon. Find out what kind of surprise Percy, Marilyn and Theresa
are going to get from Simon.
The
veteran director Kevin Rodney Sullivan narrates an interracial romantic
love story with charm and wit. He very gently handles emotional discussions
of race. Even though the movie has some crude racial jokes, Kevin has
tried to over come the pitfall by developing a good bond between the
cast members. As a movie made in an era of greater racial freedom, with
an interracial love story, it is not bad.
Ashton Kutcher delivers a sensitive, tender performance. He proves
that he can perform well in decent roles. Zoe Saldana is good and she
has a lovely presence. The rest of the characters are also appealing.
There is good chemistry between Bernie Mac and Ashton Kutcher that keeps
the movie afloat. The script is imaginative and clever. Maybe the story
could have been little more realistic and better. Over all it is entertaining
movie.
We rate this movie ABOVE AVERAGE.
