A
bio-drama that is loosely based on the life of Curtis "50Cent"
Jackson, the gangster turned rapper.
The story is narrated in a flashback, Jackson playing the role of Marcus, who
is born and raised in Queens, New York. His mother Katrina (Serena Reeder), a
drug dealer, is killed by an assailant when he is 13 years old. He never knew
his real father so his grandparents took him in, but young Marcus is highly
influenced by his mother's friend Majestic (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) and turned
into crime and drug dealing.
Young Marcus sets up his own crew of thugs and started working with the drug
kingpin Levar (Bill Duke) and climbed the ladder very fast. He made quick money
and started to enjoy expensive cars and fast women (Or vice versa). He
reconnected with his childhood sweetheart Charlene (Joy Bryant) and started to develop
a serious relationship with her.
On the sideline Marcus tried to become a rapper under the guidance of Young
Caesar. But, soon he got shot by a rival drug dealer who pumped nine bullets
into his body which didn't take his life. After the near death experience,
Marcus decided to give up his drug dealing and gangster lifestyle and become a
full time rapper. With the help of his benefactor Eminem, Marcus grew to an
acclaimed rapper.
Director Jim Sheridan narrates a semi fictional bio-drama, the story of a
fatherless orphan who is in search of his father as well as a good life. He has
lined up a good group of actors and spins an emotionally vibrant tale. The movie
has a strong script from writer Terence Winter. The supporting cast is pretty
good especially Joy Bryant as Charlene. As the story develops it is good to
watch Marcus' transformation in life, from a drug dealer to a successful rapper.
He always wanted to be a rapper but it is hard to say how much of this story is
real.
There are lot of similarities between this film and "8
Mile" in which Eminem narrated his story of life and success. The film
is filled with violence, bad language, drug content, nudity and sex. As a crime
biodrama, the film has some entertainment value. If you are a fan of "50
Cent", you will enjoy this film.
We rate this film AVERAGE.
