A family comedy that deals with the life of a corporate crook turned
to a bank robber..
Dick Harper (Jim Carrey) and his lovely wife Jane (Tea Leoni) live
and work in sunny California. He always dreamt about a high flying,
high paying job. He works for a big corporation named Globodine and
Jane is a travel agent.
Unexpectedly Dick got promoted to Vice President of Communications
which is a high powered position. Now he has a chance to work with the
legendry CEO of the company Jack McCallister (Alec Baldwin) and the
CFO, Frank Bascombe (Richard Jenkins). As soon as Dick took the new
position, he asked Jane to quit her job. But, soon Dick realized that
his promotion was a setup and he had been a scapegoat to cover up the
dirty works and frauds committed by the CEO and CFO of the company.
Globodine Corporation went under so did Dick's job. Dick's dream job
turned out to be his biggest nightmare.
Both Dick and Jane are out of work, are desperate to find a decent
job but they couldn't find any. In order to keep up with their life
style, Dick decided to turn to robbery, starting with small shops and
liquor stores and moving to local banks. Finally he came up with an
idea to steal $400 million from his ruthless boss. Find out more about
this modern day corporate thief.
Director Dean Parisot skillfully narrates a story of a corporate scandal
with great charm and wit. He courageously puts some light on the life
style of some of the thieves at American companies like Enron, Tyco,
Adelphia and Health South. He puts great emphasize on corporate greed
and the social satire of the unscrupulous CEOs. He has assembled an
exceptionally talented cast and draws a decent performance out of them
with it's own funny moments.
Jim
Carrey as Dick presents a hilarious performance as usual. He is a corporate
crook, a bank robber but a loving husband. Beautiful Tea Leoni as his
peppy wife is good. Carrey and Leoni are a good match and they have
good chemistry together.
The movie basically follows the storyline of the 1977 film starring
George Segal and Jane Fonda. The new version has its owns flaws like
a bad script and cheap jokes. The film has profanity, bad language and
sexual encounters. But it is a timely presentation of corporate greed
while Americans are still outraged by the scandals of Enron, Tyco, Adelphia,
Health South and so on. If you are fan of Jim Carrey, you will love
this film.
