Roxie, an aspiring singer-dancer obsessed with making it big, married
early to Amos Hart (John C.Reilly) has a lover named Fred Casely (Dominic
West) who promises to make her a star. But when Fred abruptly dumps her,
Roxie shoots him dead. She also ends up in the same jail as Kelly.
To avoid death row, both of them competes for the affection of the prison
matron 'Mama' Morton (Queen Latifah). Roxie builds up a friendship with
'Mama', who suggests she should hire undefeated defense lawyer Billy Flynn
(Richard Gere), who guarantees he can get any murderer off the hook for
$ 5,000. Flynn who has already taken up Velma's case, postpones it to
take up Roxie's case seeing the possibility of making another sensational
story. Rest of the movie deals with how these two women vie with each
other to be in the spotlight and become infamous and how they escape punishment
for their crimes.
Veteran stage performer Rob Marshall, who choreographed and directed
this movie has done an excellent job in making it his own unique style,
like cutting back and forth in the middle of a number, between different
settings which is very clever and brilliant.
The movie has an outstanding cast. John C. Reilly has done a splendid
job. Zellweger‘s part is the most challenging one, emotionally as well
as physically and she has handled it very well. She is beautiful as well
as talented and she makes the movie fun to watch. Richard Gere as the
ambitious lawyer with his sly sense of humour and Catherine Zeta-Jones
with her mesmerizing solo dance numbers does their parts admirably well.
The movie has every thing.. sex, beautiful women, good looking men, music,
dance you name it, the movie has it. It could win the Oscars Award for
the Best picture and Zellweger could win the Best actress Award. Don’t
miss it. It is delightful and entertaining and A MUST SEE.
