'Cellular' is a hilarious, suspenseful, action comedy based on a story by the veteran thriller writer Larry Cohen. Jessica Martin (Kim Basinger) a young mother and science teacher is kidnapped from the Brentwood section of her Los Angeles home and held hostage in an attic by thugs who want something from her husband which she knows nothing about. They also plan to kidnap her young son Ricky who attends school.

The kidnappers are cold men especially their leader Greer (Jason Statham). There was a phone in the attic which a kidnapper smashes to pieces but Jessica manages to put it together and make a random call by clicking on the wires. A stranger Ryan (Chris Evans), a slacker who hangs out at the beach answers the call on his cell phone. He is accused of being irresponsible, childish and self-centered by his ex-girlfriend Chloe (Jessica Biel).

At first he thinks it is a prank call but Jessica convinces him that she is in real danger and pleads with him not to hang up. He tries his best not to loose her signal on his way to a police station. Ryan gets veteran Desk Sgt. Mooney (William H.Macy) involved with the case and then takes his own steps to save Jessica and her son. Rest of the movie deals with Ryan's adventures to thwart the kidnappers and save Jessica and her son.

Director David Ellis cleverly narrates a tense tale with some comic relief like the police officer Mooney. It is a well detailed fantasy with a surprisingly convincing theme which force the viewers to accept it as in real life. Well acted and skillfully plotted, the movie could be one of the best thriller of this year.

Jessica's desperate plight and Ryan's line of action has been portrayed very well. Basinger, as a frightened woman, brings emotional depth and empathy to her role. It is one of her best performances so far. Chris Evans is terrific and has played his role very naturally. William H. Macy, as usual, is excellent. The action scenes are great and the chase scenes are fabulous. As a whole the movie will give you an entertaining ride. The movie also gives out a message about dangers of answering your cell phone without checking the caller ID. It is best not to answer if it is an unfamiliar number to avoid getting into strange situations.

We rate this movie Good.
