It is a comedy that deals with the life of a middle aged man who is bored but
found fun in switching girlfriends frequently.
Bill Murray plays a bachelor Don Johnston, who made a lot money in computers,
and now spends his time watching movies and listening to music. He just got
dumped by his latest girlfriend Sherry (Julie Delpy), which doesn't bother him a
bit. As a matter of fact he is happy to be alone and not being nagged by any
demanding female. Don's only contact with the outside world is Winston (Jeffrey
Wright), an African American amateur detective. One day Don gets a mysterious
letter in a pink envelope from an anonymous former lover who informs him that he
has a 19 year old son. It says that the boy is looking for his dad and he might
be coming to Don's house one day.
Don seeks Winston's help who asks him to make up a list of his ex girlfriends
about 20 years back. Then Winston made a search of these people on Google and
came up with an itinerary for Don to follow. He also insisted that Don should
visit these people and take pink flowers to each of them so that Don can watch
the reaction of the lady and get some clue.
Don sets out on an extensive road trip with a list of five ladies with whom
he had intimate relationship about 20 years back. First in the list is his old
flame Laura (Sharon Stone) now a widow, living with a sexy teenage daughter
named Lolita (Alexis Dziena). Then he move on to Dora (Frances Conroy) who lives
in a big house with her real estate developer husband Ron (Christopher McDonald)
who is not at all happy to see Don. Now Don moves on to the next one in the list,
Carmen (Jessica Lange) a lawyer with whom he had a hard time to communicate. He
moved on to the next, Penny (Tilda Swinton), who lives in a run down house. Her
husband and his friends kick Don off their property. Now Don goes in search of
the last in the list and he finds out that she was dead a while ago, and ends up
visiting her graveside.
So far
his search for his unknown son is a great disappointment but Don is
not ready to give up. Find out more about this lonely father, in his
search for his so called son...
Writer director Jim Jarmusch narrates an unusual story with great talent. He
portrays the emotional, lonely life of a middle aged man. Even though he portrays
Don as a super womanizer, he touches the soft side of the character and makes
the audience wonder how in the world this character can charm this many
women.
Bill Murray as Don presents an excellent performance. His task as a womanizer
is effortless, but charming. He portray the loneliness and the desire to
reach out to a comforting soul very well. He is determined to find his so called
son, which may be hard to justify for a character like him. Most of the women
were happy to see him again, then why would they have left him in the first
place? Some people will say that this film has an unsatisfying climax.
The movie has female nudity, premarital sex as well as drug use. Still it is
an elegant film with an unusual storyline and a good cast. You can discover the delightful
past of a lonely man and will be touched by his soft side.
We rate this movie GOOD.
