Ignacio has become a drag queen named Zahara (also Garcia Bernal),
who sleeps with a man only to learn that it is Enrique, his boyhood
friend and lover. She goes back to the school and confronts Father Manolo
the school principal, telling him that he should pay one million pesetas
or she will reveal that one night in 1964 when she (Ignacio) had sex
with Father Manolo in order to stop him from expelling Enrique from
the school. Now, Father Manolo has left priesthood and goes by the name
Berenguer ( played by Homer). When Enrique decides to make the film
with Ignacio as the star, there are more revelations including the real
account of how Ignacio died.
The director spins successfully a complicated story of past love and
sexual abuse which is a film with in a film. He uses many flashbacks
to incorporate all the bits and pieces of the plot. He very well portrays
the mistaken identities of Ignacio as well as the priest who returns
from the past as a new man. He cleverly handles the touchy issue of
priesthood pedophilia.
Of the cast Bernal is a revelation as the man and woman who carries
the film. Daniel Gimenez Cacho puts up an excellent performance as the
predatory priest. It is a well directed ,well acted and well made film.
We rate this movie Good.
